United Future's Disability Policy
Posted on September 08, 2014
For those considering to vote United Future you can find their policy on Disability Issues here.
It's rather brief and straight to the point, with the main focus on housing and ensuring that people with disabilities can live by themselves. I am going to be honest, I am not an expert on the workings of Peter Dunne; how he's voted on disability related issues whilst in holding Ministerial Roles, etc. so I am taking this policy from a bit of a face value approach.
Whilst at the CCS 'My Voice Counts' forum United Future's candidate Damian Light spoke a lot about 'Client Based' services, which is something that a lot of people have been talking about. I personally think it's really important, as after all we know our needs better than anyone else.
Another positive that I saw from United Future in their Special Education policy is an increase in ORRS funding. Talking to people who work in the sector, this is something that needs to be improved. They also realised that there are many problems with the funding scheme that need to be sorted out.
So overall I think the policy has some great points, however lacking is a focus on employment and captioning for television, both key topics this election.
