20percent is a campaign that will focus on educating and motivating people within the disability community to get out and vote. As one in five New Zealanders (20percent) have a disability, we want you to realise that people with disabilities can have their voices heard. Throughout the build up to the election we will keep you updated with what parties are saying and how you can get involved regardless of your political beliefs. We will have topics to debate, spotlights placed on electorates and video interviews with key players.
As Election Day gets closer, the focus of the campaign will change to how to physically get out there and vote. Talking with some people within the disabled community, they have been nervous about turning up to polling booths at venues they are unfamiliar with and we hope to remove as many barriers as possible to ensure everyone exercises their democratic right.
Since our campaign has been launched research has been released showing that it's now 24% of New Zealanders have a disability! Even more reason for the politicians to sit up and start taking notice of the disability sector!
Former Whangarei resident Loren Corbett is on board to manage the national 20percent campaign.
Loren has recently graduated from The University of Waikato with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Political Science and a Bachelor of Communications majoring in Public Relations. She is excited to help develop this campaign into one that will have an impact on the elections.
20percent is supported by Tiaho Trust and CCS Disability Action.
